DAILY UPDATE

OpenAI shut down Sora after heavy costs, internal shifts, and a surprise impact on Disney.

OpenAI quietly pulled the plug on its Sora video tool after it became too expensive and resource-heavy, while shifting focus to a new internal project. The move also caught Disney off guard, despite ongoing collaboration.

  • Sora was costing about $1M per day and using huge compute power, even as a new version was about to start training

  • Disney was informed less than an hour before the shutdown, leaving their partnership now mostly inactive

  • Resources were moved to a new model called β€œSpud”, focused on coding and enterprise needs to compete with Anthropic

This shows how fast priorities can change in AI, especially when costs and competition rise. It also raises concerns about trust and communication, as even major partners like Disney can be left out at the last minute.

TODAY’S HIGHLIGHT

Microsoft adds multi-model review to Copilot for smarter research

Microsoft has introduced Critique and Council, two new features that upgrade Copilot into a multi-model research system. These tools let different AI models work together to review, challenge, and compare research before it is delivered.

  • Critique mode uses a second model, Claude, to review reports, checking sources, completeness, and evidence after the first model writes them.

  • One model creates the research, while the other analyzes and questions it behind the scenes.

  • Council mode runs both models together, showing where they agree, disagree, and add unique insights.

This shift shows that using more than one AI model can lead to better and more reliable results. A single model can sound convincing even when it is wrong, so having another model challenge and verify the work helps reduce mistakes and improves trust.
